The Archaeological Resources Protection Act should be implemented against the persons who destroyed the archaeological ruins in Balumgala close to the historic Vijithapura archaeological site, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Venerable Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera said.
He made these comments to the media after an observation tour with a group of representatives on Monday (7) to inspect the destruction caused to the site by dozers belonging to the National Housing Development Authority.
“We thank the media for creating such awareness among the people about the destruction caused to the Balumgala archaeological site which belongs to the Ipalogama Divisional Secretariat’s Division.
With experiences gained so far, the rulers in this country will come in search of us armed with the penal code today or tomorrow and ask as to why we went to the jungles.that is the nature of the law in this country; it is not the theft that is being investigated but the people who pointed them out,” the thera said.
He also said that the competent authority of these lands is the Divisional Secretary who is entrusted with the allocation of a suitable location for such buildings.there may be some persons who are greedy for treasure troves. But, this place has been identified as an archaeological site due to the proof of the availability of archaeological ruins by the Department of Archaeology, which made arrangements to stop building projects there about 20 years ago. In this regard, he requested the government to implement the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and bring the culprits to book.
“This is a historic site which has become popular among young and old alike. The thera wanted to know why the authorities were in such a hurry to start building on this land in spite of the fact that there were certain rules in place with regard to cutting the forests etc.the ministers seem to be unaware of this,”venerable Gnanasara Thera said.
